Sometimes it feels like limnology is an Internet afterthought and this blog is the lone oasis of freshwater science in a cyber wasteland.
But then a few links surface from the deep and I realize that there’s actually a lot of cool freshwater science on the web if you just know where to look. So here are a couple of cool endeavors that should wet your whistle.
Thanks for the outreach assist, fellow limnologist-types!
Making Waves Podcast
Not only did the North American Benthological Society recently update its name, it’s also jumping on the science outreach bandwagon and reaching out to the broader public. Now called the Society for Freshwater Sciences, the SFS just released a new podcast series called “Making Waves,” hosted by former CFL students Eric Moody and Tim Cline. Listen to SFS president Dave Penrose discuss the future of the organization below.
One perk? Its acronym won’t be NABS and they won’t have to define benthology to non-benthologists anymore!
Freshwater Fish on Facebook
Wading into the stream of social media, CFL post docs, Brenda Pracheil and Stephanie Januchowski-Hartley created “Freshwater Fish” on Facebook. Anyone signing on to be their friend can see awesome pictures of Brenda and Steph’s fish-wrangling exploits and status updates concerning anxiety meds affecting fish, floating islands cleaning the Mississippi and more.
