The “ice off” pool has officially opened here at the Center for Limnology, which means we’re all waiting to see when Lake Mendota will thaw this spring. (The forecast indicates it won’t be this week, at least!) While we still have some time left for ice fishing, skating and all of those other frozen-lake pursuits, we thought we’d share this cool video from The Weather Channel. While no ice is 100% safe, this gives some good guidelines.
Knowing when it’s safe to venture out on the ice is going to become more and more important as lakes in our part of the world enter the “intermittent ice zone” thanks to climate change. So stay safe and enjoy the lakes while we can still count on winter to freeze them!
